Are Personal Trainers Really a Worthwhile Investment?

Debating on whether or not you want to hire a personal trainer in the gym?

Depending on who you ask, you'll find varying answers when it comes to the debate of whether or not it's worth it to hire a personal trainer.

On one hand, you'll get people telling you that you don't need one at all, and that you can find everything you need just by yourself without spending any additional money.

On the other hand, you'll hear people telling you how worthwhile it is to get a personal trainer, how it clears everything up and really sets you back on track to reach your goals.

So which side is right?

Are personal trainers really worth it?

In this post, I'm going to go over my take on this debate, and giving you 6 reasons why I think it IS worth it to hire a personal trainer for yourself.

Let's get into it.

Why Should You Hire a Personal Trainer?

There are several reasons why I, and many others would recommend that you hire a trainer of some sort.

A Personal Trainer Helps Remove Initial Confusion

One of the primary reasons why so many people are hiring personal trainers is due to the fact that it's actually pretty difficult to get started in fitness.

It can be extremely overwhelming at the start, with so many options in the gym and no idea what's what.

Should you do cardio?

Should you go and start bench pressing?

What's going to get me to lose weight and build muscle?

There are hundreds and hundreds of questions that you'll find yourself asking at the beginning of your fitness journey, and it's simply not worth the hassle for many people.

Instead, they'd rather invest a little bit of money into hiring a personal trainer in order to get themselves off the ground and started in their journey straight away.

With a personal trainer, you'd likely find that everything makes more sense and is a lot easier to understand when you've got someone else actively explaining everything to you, and making sure that you're doing everything right.

Even if it's just for the beginning of your journey to help introduce you to everything and get you used to the crazy amount of options and choices you have, a personal trainer can certainly be a worthwhile investment for any fitness beginner.

A Personal Trainer Can Motivate You

Sometimes, it's hard to find the motivation to get into the gym and work hard.

After all, it's not like it's something that you have to do.

It's a pretty extraordinary thing to be doing in the first place, and sometimes it can feel lonely and hard to do.

In those cold mornings when you have to fight yourself out of bed, or even when you're already in the gym and finding it hard to fight for those final reps, it can often be tough to stay motivated and continue to give it your best.

I'm sure you know what it feels like to wake up on a Monday morning and have to go to work or school.

Even yet, it's easier to get up for work because it's something that you need to do.

A workout isn't.

It's a choice, and that's what makes it so much harder to stick to.

Now this is where a good, inspiring personal trainer can come in and help keep you motivated.

Whether it's simply a friendly, encouraging text in the morning or motivating words during your exercises in the gym, it's always easier to work hard when you have somebody else encouraging on your side!

So if you're constantly finding it tough to stay motivated and work hard in the gym, it might pay for you to consider hiring a personal trainer to keep yourself accountable in the gym!

A Personal Trainer Can Make the Gym More Enjoyable

Many people will be able to agree or relate with this.

Especially if they used to train alone.

Having another person with you all the way through your workouts can be such a motivating, refreshing experience in the gym if it's something you enjoy doing.

What I've found from lots and lots of gymgoers is that people enjoy working out, but would much rather prefer to do it with someone else, and find it tough to get into the gym otherwise.

If this sounds like you, then definitely think about investing in a good personal trainer!

Having that person to talk to, laugh with and work out with is such a refreshing feeling if you're used to working out alone and by yourself.

I know it might just be easier and make more sense to get a friend to train with you in the gym, but that's not always possible for everyone.

On top of this, it definitely pays to have a knowledgeable, experienced person by your side to help you reach your own goals in fitness faster!

A Personal Trainer Grants Access to Educated Advice

With so many options, choices and opinions in the gym, it can often be hard to differentiate between actual, useful advice, and 'tips' that people are simply waffling about.

However, if you're willing to invest that money for a good, knowledgeable personal trainer, it can help cut out all the false information and help you make sure you're staying on track of whatever you're doing.

Now you will have to be wary because it's certainly true that not all personal trainers know what they're talking about.

Some personal trainers will have their qualifications and training, but may not actually be dedicated or committed enough to go out and educate themselves as best as possible before pushing their knowledge onto you.

Instead, they might spread false information unknowingly, and that could definitely lead to you not seeing the results you deserve for all the hard work you're doing.

My best advice to you would be to find a way to educate yourself even a little bit, so that you can make some judgements on your own and decide whether or not your personal trainers really do know what they're talking about.

If you're ever unsure, there are always great sources online that you can refer to in order to find some good, useful information.

These could include:

  • Jeff Nippard

  • Jeremy Ethier

  • Eugene Teo

  • Scott Herman

  • JPG Coaching

  • Cayle PT

  • Athlean-X

  • Evan Holmes

And many more!

But yes, when you do find a good personal trainer that genuinely cares about your progress, it is extremely rewarding and definitely a worthwhile investment if you're finding it tough to know what's good and what isn't.

A Personal Trainer Can Help With Networking

One big advantage that comes with hiring a personal trainer and working out with more people is the fact that they can help you meet new people, make more friends and expand your social network.

A personal trainer would be able to refer you to their other clients, friends and fellow trainers, all of whom would have similar interests in the gym and would be like-minded people.

It's great to have somebody to introduce you to their own social circle or network, and getting a personal trainer is certainly a great way to do this!

Getting a Personal Trainer Can Help Prevent Injuries

Many injuries in the gym are caused by incorrect training procedures and technique.

By getting a personal trainer and having a person who's more experienced with this stuff by your side, your chances of getting hurt or injured will decrease drastically.

You'll always have that extra pair of eyes with you to make sure you're lifting the weights properly, running with the right form, and just doing everything safely.

Plus, they can spot you whenever you're attempting heavier weights for the first couple of times!

As I've mentioned earlier, it can be tough to know what's right and what's wrong at the beginning.

And if it's something that could cause you injury or even send you to the hospital, it's certainly not a risk that you want to take!

If this sounds smart to you, getting a personal trainer might just be worth it!

Conclusion

All in all, a personal trainer can definitely be a worthwhile investment into your fitness journey if you're in the right circumstances.

For the right people, getting a personal trainer can mean the difference between making slow progress, if any at all, and seeing rapid results that they can truly be proud of.

Have a think about it, and don't immediately disregard personal trainers as an approach towards your fitness goals!

Good luck!
